Ginger Extract is a botanical extract obtained from the rhizome of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, commonly known as Ginger. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and is widely used as a botanical ingredient in cosmetic, personal care, herbal and wellness-oriented formulations.
The Ginger rhizome contains a characteristic group of pungent phenolic compounds known as gingerols and shogaols, together with zingerone, volatile oils and other naturally occurring constituents. 6-Gingerol is one of the principal gingerol constituents found in ginger, while shogaols are formed in greater proportion during processing or drying.
Ginger Extract can be incorporated into a wide variety of cosmetic and personal care formulations where a botanical ingredient with a characteristic ginger profile is desired. It is suitable for skin care, face care, body care, hair care and scalp care formulations, including creams, lotions, serums, gels, shampoos, conditioners and specialty personal care products. Cosmetic ingredient references list Ginger-derived ingredients for functions including skin conditioning, fragrance and tonic applications.
The composition of Ginger Extract depends on the plant material, extraction method, extraction solvent, processing conditions and degree of standardization. Different extraction techniques can produce substantially different profiles of gingerols, shogaols and volatile constituents. HPLC methods are available for quantitative analysis of gingerols and shogaols in ginger extracts.
For standardized grades, the extract may be specified according to total gingerols, 6-Gingerol, total gingerols and shogaols, or another supplier-defined marker. The actual specification should always be based on the product's COA and technical data rather than assuming one universal active percentage.
