Ashwagandha Extract is a botanical extract derived primarily from the roots of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, commonly known as Ashwagandha, Indian Ginseng or Winter Cherry. The plant belongs to the Solanaceae family and has a long history of use as a traditional botanical ingredient.
Ashwagandha Root Extract contains a characteristic group of naturally occurring steroidal lactones known as withanolides. These compounds are widely used as marker constituents for the identification and standardization of Withania somnifera extracts. Individual withanolides such as Withaferin A, Withanolide A and Withanolide D may also be evaluated depending on the extract specification and analytical requirement.
In cosmetic and personal care formulations, Ashwagandha Extract can be incorporated into products where a botanical ingredient is desired, including skin care, face care, hair care, scalp care, creams, lotions, serums, gels, shampoos and conditioners.
The composition of Ashwagandha Extract depends on the plant part, extraction ratio, extraction solvent, processing method and degree of standardization. Root-only extracts are commonly supplied as powders, while liquid extracts may be supplied in water, glycerin or other suitable carriers.
For standardized grades, the extract can be specified according to total Withanolides, with the actual standardization established from the product's technical specification or Certificate of Analysis. Analytical methods may include HPLC/UHPLC for individual withanolides or validated methods such as gravimetric determination for specified total-withanolide grades. Importantly, a gravimetric withanolide percentage should not automatically be treated as equivalent to an HPLC percentage.
