Citrus Essential Oils

Citrus Essential Oils are natural aromatic oils obtained from various species of the Citrus genus, including Sweet Orange Essential Oil Lemon Essential Oil Lime Essential Oil Grapefruit Essential Oil Mandarin Essential Oil Bergamot Essential Oil Belonging primarily to the Rutaceae family, citrus oils are commonly obtained from the peel of citrus fruits through cold pressing, expression or distillation, depending on the specific oil. Citrus Essential Oils contain naturally occurring volatile compounds dominated by monoterpenes and oxygenated terpenes, with limonene being a major constituent in many citrus oils. Other characteristic compounds may include α-pinene, β-pinene, γ-terpinene, myrcene, linalool, linalyl acetate and citral, depending on the citrus species and extraction method. In cosmetic and personal-care formulations, Citrus Essential Oils are primarily valued for their fresh, characteristic fragrance and sensory properties. They are widely incorporated into soaps, shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, body washes, creams, lotions, facial products, hair-care products, perfumes and natural fragrance blends. The chemical composition and quality profile of each Citrus Essential Oil depends on the botanical species, geographical origin, fruit maturity, extraction method and storage conditions. GC-FID and GC-MS are commonly used to establish the characteristic volatile profile and verify the identity and quality of the oil. Because certain expressed citrus oils may contain naturally occurring photoreactive constituents, the appropriate IFRA guidance, supplier documentation and formulation-specific safety assessment should be considered when using citrus oils in leave-on products.
