Orange Oil is a botanical essential oil obtained primarily by cold pressing or expression of the peel of ripe sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis), belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is valued for its bright, fresh and naturally sweet citrus aroma.
Its principal constituent is d-limonene, along with smaller amounts of α-pinene, β-pinene, myrcene, sabinene and other naturally occurring volatile compounds. The composition varies with orange variety, geographical origin, harvesting conditions and extraction method.
In cosmetic formulations, Orange Oil is primarily used as a fragrance/perfuming ingredient, while contributing a refreshing sensory character to skin and hair-care products. It is suitable for creams, lotions, cleansers, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, body-care products, massage oils and perfumes.
Quality is typically evaluated through organoleptic and physicochemical parameters and the characteristic volatile profile using GC-FID and/or GC-MS. As with other citrus essential oils, formulators should consider oxidation stability, fragrance-allergen requirements and applicable IFRA recommendations. For expressed citrus oils, the presence and level of naturally occurring photoreactive constituents should also be considered according to the specific grade and application.
