ergamot Oil is a natural essential oil obtained primarily through cold pressing (cold expression) of the fresh fruit peel of Bergamot (Citrus bergamia), belonging to the Rutaceae family. It has a distinctive fresh, sweet, citrusy and slightly floral aroma and is an important natural ingredient in modern perfumery and personal-care formulations.
The oil contains d-Limonene as one of its principal constituents, together with other naturally occurring volatile compounds such as linalyl acetate, linalool, γ-terpinene, β-pinene, α-pinene and myrcene. The relative proportions vary according to fruit variety, geographical origin, maturity, extraction process and grade.
Unlike many other citrus oils, Bergamot Oil is particularly valued for its linalool and linalyl acetate content, which contribute significantly to its characteristic floral-citrus fragrance profile.
Bergamot Oil is primarily used as a fragrance/perfuming ingredient and is widely incorporated into skin-care, hair-care, bath and body products, soaps, deodorants and fine fragrances.
Quality is generally evaluated through organoleptic and physicochemical parameters and its characteristic volatile profile using GC-FID and/or GC-MS. As an essential oil, it should be specified according to the actual commercial grade and supplier COA rather than using a single universal active percentage.
