Product Information

Giloy Extract

Giloy Extract is a botanical extract derived primarily from the stem of Tinospora cordifolia, commonly known as Giloy, Guduchi or Amrita. It contains naturally occurring alkaloids, glycosides, diterpenoids, steroids and other phytoconstituents and is suitable for cosmetic, personal care and botanical formulations.

Giloy Extract is a botanical extract derived primarily from the stem of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thomson, commonly known as Giloy, Guduchi, Amrita, Gulancha or Indian Tinospora. It belongs to the Menispermaceae family and is a perennial climbing plant widely found in tropical regions of India and other parts of South and Southeast Asia.

The stem of Tinospora cordifolia contains a diverse range of naturally occurring phytochemicals, including alkaloids, diterpenoid lactones, glycosides, steroids, sesquiterpenoids, phenolic compounds and polysaccharides. Reported constituents include berberine, palmatine, magnoflorine, tinosporin, columbin, tinosporides, cordifoliosides, tinocordifoliosides, β-sitosterol and ecdysteroid-related compounds.

Giloy Extract can be incorporated into cosmetic and personal care formulations where a botanical or herbal ingredient is desired. It can be used in skin care, face care, body care, creams, lotions, gels, serums, cleansing products and herbal personal care formulations.

The composition of Giloy Extract depends on the plant part, extraction solvent, extraction ratio, processing conditions, geographical origin and degree of standardization. Consequently, different commercial extracts may have substantially different phytochemical profiles.

Recent analytical research on Tinospora cordifolia stem extracts has demonstrated the use of UHPLC-PDA and HPTLC for characterization and chemical fingerprinting. Compounds including cordifolioside A, magnoflorine and β-ecdysone have been quantitatively investigated as characteristic constituents.

For standardized commercial grades, the appropriate marker and assay should therefore be based on the actual product specification and Certificate of Analysis (COA) rather than assigning one universal active percentage to all Giloy Extracts.
