Brahmi Extract is a botanical extract derived from the aerial parts of Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst., commonly known as Brahmi or Water Hyssop. It is a small creeping herb traditionally used as a botanical ingredient and is widely incorporated into herbal, Ayurvedic, cosmetic and personal care formulations.
Bacopa monnieri contains naturally occurring triterpenoid saponins collectively referred to as bacosides. Bacoside A and related bacosides are commonly used as characteristic marker compounds for identification and standardization of Bacopa monnieri extracts. Individual constituents such as Bacoside A3 and other bacosides may also be evaluated depending on the specification and analytical method.
Brahmi Extract can be incorporated into a variety of cosmetic and personal care formulations where a botanical ingredient is desired. It is suitable for hair care, scalp care, skin care, face care, creams, lotions, serums, shampoos, conditioners and herbal personal care products.
The composition of Brahmi Extract depends on the plant part, extraction ratio, extraction solvent, processing conditions and degree of standardization. Different commercial extracts may therefore have substantially different concentrations of bacosides.
For standardized grades, the extract may be specified according to total bacosides / bacoside content. Analytical determination may be performed using HPLC or other validated chromatographic methods, depending on the manufacturer's specification.
